DESIGN: In a cohort of adolescents participating in a longitudinal study of insulin resistance, Slaughter formulas were used to estimate adiposity from skinfolds and DXA was used to estimate adiposity as % body fat (%BF) and fat mass (FBM). BMI, blood pressure, lipids and insulin resistance were measured.

SUBJECTS: Male and female, 11 y old (n=130).

MEASUREMENTS: To compare DXA with two office based methods of assessing fatness and cardiovascular risk.

RESULTS: Slaughter estimates were highly correlated with DXA (%BF r=0.92, P=0.0001; FBM r=0.96, P=0.0001). Correlations were similar in heavy and thin children. BMI was also highly correlated with DXA (%BF r=0.85, P=0.0001; FBM r=0.95, P=0.0001), and these relations were stronger in heavy than thin children. BMI and the Slaughter formulas were similar to DXA in their relations to cardiovascular risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS: Adiposity by BMI and Slaughter formulas are highly correlated with DXA and similarly related to cardiovascular risk factors. BMI is easy to obtain and is an acceptable method for initial office estimation of body fatness. BMI and skinfolds compare well with DXA in predicting adverse cardiovascular risk profile.

A variety of other, more elaborate, methods are also used as measures of body composition16, 17 including underwater weighing, dual energy X ray absorptiometry (DXA), estimates of total body water, total body electrical conductivity, total body potassium, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. Among these, DXA has become the most widely used because of its accuracy and ease of measurement for both the patient and the technician.18 Considered by many to be the 'gold standard' for estimating body fatness, DXA measurements have been limited to the research setting because of their complexity and cost.19, 20, 21, 22, 23 Previous studies have reported significant associations between BMI and DXA9, 24, 25 and a recent report in Pima Indian children showed significant relations for both BMI and DXA with blood pressure, lipids and fasting insulin.

As a result of the current specific interest in body fatness as it relates to the metabolic syndrome, we have analyzed our data from a cohort of adolescents participating in a longitudinal natural history study of insulin resistance to compare DXA with pandora sale two office based methods of assessing fatness. The participants in this study were healthy 11 adolescents who were recruited as sibling participants in a longitudinal study of cardiovascular risk factors in children.27 Tanner stage was assigned according to pubic hair development in boys and breast and pubic hair development in girls. Body composition measurements were obtained by trained research personnel. Height was measured using a wall mounted stadiometer and weight was determined using a balance scale. Triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness were measured in duplicate to the nearest millimeter with Lange calipers and the mean values were used in the analyses. Percent body fat (%BFSF), calculated from the equations devised by Slaughter et al14 was based on triceps and subscapular skinfold values, taking into account gender, ethnicity and pandora charms clearance stage of maturation. The average of the z scores for the four variables was computed (with reversed sign for HDL C). Thus, an average higher z score indicates that the four variables tend to cluster in the higher distributions (ie, higher risk), whereas a lower z score indicates the opposite. To ensure that the cluster analysis was not unduly influenced by a single abnormal variable we reviewed the individual clusters and found the expected distribution, that is, a high number of high individual variable z scores in the highest clusters, a high number of low individual variable z scores in the lowest clusters, and a mix of individual z scores in the middle clusters.

The euglycemic insulin clamp studies were conducted in the University of Minnesota Clinical Research Center, as previously described.27 Blood samples for serum insulin levels were obtained at baseline ( 10, 5 and 0 min before starting the insulin infusion) and at steady state during the clamp (+140, +160, +180 min). Plasma glucose was also measured at baseline ( 10, 5 and 0 min) and every 5 min during the clamp. Serum lipids were measured once at baseline. The insulin infusion was started at time 0 and continued at a rate of 1 mU/kg/min for 3 h. An infusion of 20% glucose was started at time 0 and was adjusted, based on plasma glucose levels, to maintain euglycemia, that is, plasma glucose at 5.6 mmol/l (100 mg/dl). Insulin sensitivity was determined from the amount of glucose required to maintain euglycemia over the final 40 min of the euglycemic clamp study and was expressed as M (ie, glucose utilization/kg body weight/min). A lower M indicates insulin resistance. All statistical analyses were conducted using the SAS statistical package, version 8.2. The pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used for analyses. The pearson correlation coefficients were compared between children above and below the sex specific median %BFDXA after transformation to Fisher's z (1/2 ln ((1+r)/(1 r)), which has variance1/(N 3). Comparisons were adjusted by linear regression for race, gender and Tanner score. A P value of 0.05 or less was considered to be statistically significant.

African Americans represented 32% of the males and 17% of the females (Table 1). The girls were slightly older than the boys, and although the mean Tanner score was not significantly different between the genders as expected for this age, sexual maturation was more advanced in girls (5% Tanner 1 and 2, 19% Tanner 3, 76% Tanner 4 and 5) compared to boys (32% Tanner 1 and 2, 22% Tanner 3, 46% Tanner 4 and 5). The boys were taller than the girls but body weight was slightly higher and BMI was significantly higher in girls. Systolic blood pressure and triglycerides were significantly higher in the boys. Girls had significantly higher fasting insulin and a lower M value, that is, were more insulin resistant than the boys. The greater body fatness in girls was clearly demonstrated in the skinfold measures and in both the DXA based and skinfold based estimates of %BF and FBM. The mean %BFSF was underestimated by 5% and mean FBMSF was underestimated by 3.4 kg in girls when compared to the DXA estimates. In contrast, the mean skinfold and DXA estimates of %BF and FBM were virtually identical in boys. Correlation of %BF by DXA with BMI was 0.89 for males and 0.87 for females. Correlation of FBMDXA with BMI was 0.95 for both males and females. These correlations were nearly identical when the white participants or the black participants were considered separately (data not shown). The regression lines show highly significant correlations and for any given BMI %BF is lower in boys than girls. [1] There seemed to be less snow on the ground and the temperatures seemed milder than in previous years, but even when the snow is deep, the wind swirling and the temperature plummeting, the Sundance Film Festival always provides a warm welcome to the Journal of Religion Film representatives. We want to thank Patrick Hubley, Brianna Smith, Levi Elder and the entire Press Office of the Festival for making our stay so enjoyable and productive. After seeing these movies, I paid attention to what my colleagues had been saying about the power of film.

Resolution and self discovery occur back at fateful bridge, but Besson can't leave it alone. One minute sad and profound, the next funny and ironic he settles for a sentimental denouement with one too many twists and perhaps one too many happy endings. For the rest of the film, we watch as many aspects of Fiona's memory and life fall away. Grant remains a constant, although often unrecognized partner. The presence of another patient, Aubrey (Michael Murphy), and his wife Marian (Olympia Dukakis) complicate the lives of Grant and Fiona even more.

[9] Despite the somber topic, this film is a testament to the difficult and sometimes contrary beauty of true love. In his quest to care for Fiona, Grant must confront his own guilt, selfishness and grief. By recognizing and transcending these, he becomes a more compassionate human.

[11] Bugmaster is a non narrative imagistic drama by director Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira). With interlocking stories and layers upon layers of metaphors, the meaning of this film remains largely unclear. It requires a great deal of energy to follow, but the fantastical images, inspired by the original manga artist Yuki Urashibara, sometimes make this effort worthwhile.

[11]Bugmaster takes place just over a century ago in Japan. The protagonist, Ginko (Joe Odagiri), even as a young boy, can see bugs (Mushi). Bugs here are not the insect kind, but rather something that exist but cannot normally be seen. They are spirit forces or specters that are sometimes malevolent or parasitical. There is also Tokoyami, a very powerful Mushi, which seems to reside in the bottom of a magical pond. Tokoyami is pure darkness and it eats light.

Ginko, as an adult, also has a powerful connection with Tanyu (Yu Aoi), a beautiful young woman whose congenital Mushi allow her to record the history of the bugs and the stories of bugmasters.

[13] Throughout the film there are references to light and darkness, to balance versus harmful parasitism, to bridges and rainbows. The look of the film is exquisite, which makes up somewhat for ambiguities in the plot and meaning of the film.

[14] Filmed amidst the iconic landscapes of the easternmost reaches of the Navajo Nation Reservation, Conversion dramatizes the tragic consequences of an actual incident between a Dine' (Navajo) Medicine Man and Christian missionaries.

"Enemies of Happiness begins in 2003 with the rebellious Joya being thrown out of the Loya Jirga after verbally attacking several members of the assembly as criminals, warlords who have oppressed the poor and women in their effort to maintain the status quo. Later she begins her own campaign to her subsequent election two years later but not before she survives four attempts on her life. One night, much to her chagrin, she escapes a death threat by wearing the dreaded burqua, a symbol of anonymity she had persuaded other Afghan women to disavow.

Debate brewing over storefront sign

CARMEL A new business sign has caused controversy because of its design; some people said it does not fit the look of the Carmel Arts Design District.

Carmel Couture opened this summer in the Carmel Arts Design District. The store is located on South Rangeline Road. It sells fashion jewelry, as well as high end jewelry. Some of their merchandise is more than $15,000.

Carmel Couture was issued its sign permit in Sept., by the Department of Community Services, after the agency approved its plans. The storefront sign was put up on Friday, Oct.18. Carmel City Council Member Ron Carter said he would prefer that business signs in the Carmel Arts Design District compliment the architecture of the buildings. He does not believe the sign meets that look.

Finding and attracting a mate is tricky business for most species. It can be quite helpful then to have a species specific signal that is sent and received by members of your own species, but not perceived as well by predators. Chemical signals (those we perceive through smell and taste) are among the most diverse and specific signals produced in the animal kingdom, so they make good candidates for these species specific mating signals. Sex pheromones are chemical compounds released by an animal that attract animals of the same species but opposite sex.
